Military Fly Overs in NYC

In connection with the U.S.S. Michael Murphy Commissioning Ceremony the following aviation activities and cannon salutes will be taking place on Friday, October 5^th (Practice Day) and Saturday, October 6^th (Commissioning Day). Please note that all aviation activities are weather permitting.

· On Friday, October 5^th at 9:45am, the United States Navy Parachute Demonstration Team will execute a practice parachute jump over the Hudson River adjacent to Manhattan's Pier 88 (3 jumpers total) and will employ the use of a UH-60 helicopter to execute the jump.

· On Friday, October 5^th at 10:05am, the U.S.S. Michael Murphy (located at Manhattan's Pier 88) will conduct a cannon salute test, consisting of one (1) 40MM round, in preparation for the commissioning ceremony.

· On Saturday, October 6^th at 9:45am, the United States Navy Parachute Demonstration Team will execute a ceremonial parachute jump over the Hudson River adjacent to Manhattan's Pier 88 (3 jumpers total) and will employ the use of a UH-60 helicopter to execute the jump.

· On Saturday, October 6^th at 10:05am (local time), the U.S.S. Michael Murphy (located at Manhattan's Pier 88) will conduct a ceremonial cannon salute, consisting of nineteen (19) 40MM rounds, as part of the commissioning ceremony.

· On Saturday, October 6^th at 11:00am, two (2) FA-18 fighter jets will conduct a flyover of the Hudson River and the U.S.S Michael Murphy at Manhattan's Pier 88. The aircraft will pass over the U.S.S. Michael Murphy at an altitude of approximately 1,000 feet. The aircraft will then return to their point of origin (LaGuardia Airport) via the Hudson River following the activity.

U.S. Coast Guard To Acquire Three Additional HC-130J Surveillance Aircraft

Will Bring The USCG Fleet Of The Airplanes To Nine

The U.S. Coast Guard has entered into a contract with Lockheed Martin for three additional HC-130Js. This will increase the U.S. Coast Guard fleet of HC-130Js from six to nine. The contract also includes funding for two mission suites, which are critical in supporting U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue operations. The new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in early 2015. "The Coast Guard, like many services in the Hercules family, continues to recapitalize with the C-130J," said Jack Crisler, Lockheed Martin vice president for Air Mobility. "The C-130J is without equal in terms of its multi-role, multi-mission flexibility and availability. No aircraft in production — or in development — can match the capabilities of the Super Hercules."

The current fleet of HC-130Js, based at Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., meets long-range maritime patrol requirements in areas that cannot be patrolled efficiently by medium range surveillance aircraft or cutters. The Long Range Surveillance (LRS) aircraft also provide heavy air transport for maritime safety and security teams, port security units, and National Strike Force personnel and equipment.

The HC-130J's special mission suite is comprised of a two mission system operator station located behind the pilot and co-pilot, a belly-mounted 360-degree long range search radar, nose-mounted forward looking infrared radar and an advanced mission communications suite. The missionized HC-130J is designed to deliver enhanced search, detection and tracking capabilities.

Beautful Day for Kayak Fishing, Tragic Outcome

Unfortunately, another kayak fisherman has drowned. According to local
news reports, the 58-year old male was wearing no life jacket, had beer
in the boat, and tried to swim to shore after capsizing. The incident
occurred in Pohick Bay, Virginia, adjoining the Potomac River. Pohick
Bay is generally still water, with a weak underwater current from
Accotink Creek. This is not wild country or wild water; Pohick Bay is in
the middle of the Washington, DC suburbs. The accident occurred in sight
of the person who called 911.

The victim's mistakes suggest he had not attended a safe boating course.
Auxiliary PEs are encouraged to offer the Paddlesports America course in
their local area to help prevent future catastrophes like this one. Find

Instructors don't need to be kayakers to teach this course. The material on basic
boating safety should be quite familiar from teaching BS&S or ABC. The

Coast Guard Auxiliary has joined forces with Alliance for Safe Navigation

WASHINGTON - The Coast Guard Auxiliary has joined forces with the Alliance for Safe Navigation (Alliance) to inform boaters of the importance of maintaining current navigation information.  Alliance members include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), BoatUS, Jeppesen Marine, the U.S. Power Squadron, OceanGrafix, and the Sea Tow Foundation for Boating Safety and Education.

Surveys have revealed that most boaters are not concerned about the accuracy of their charts and related navigation information. More than three quarters do not pay attention to local notice to mariners issued by the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will utilize its Alliance partnership to promote boating safety.

Tours This Week of New Ship: USS MICHAEL MURPHY in NYC

The Navy has scheduled several days of public tours of a new destroyer that will be commissioned in New York this week in honor of a hero SeAL from Long Island. The USS Michael Murphy is named for the Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan in June 2005. Murphy's family will attend the formal commissioning on Oct. 6 in Manhattan.

Pier 88 in Manhattan - Open to the public Oct. 2, 3 and 8 from 1 - 5 p.m., lines may be capped at 4 p.m. Closed shoes and a government ID is required to board.

NOV 11th, 2012 NYC Veteran's Day Parade honoring the US Coast Guard

As per Hope Wright, SO-PA, November 11th the annual Veterans Day Parade will honor the United States Coast Guard and members of the USCG Auxiliary are asked to march that day with their Flotillas. A ceremony is usually held at 9 a.m. at Madison Square Park on 23rd Street honoring recipients of the Medal of Honor and other veterans, and the Parade heads north from there on Fifth Avenue to 59th Street. Those marching in the Parade, and not attending the ceremony, usually muster up on 44th Street in front of the NY Yacht Club at about 10 a.m. UOD is Service Dress Blues, blouse and combination hat. In case of rain, trench coats will be required.

 

 

OCT 4-5th, 2012 - AVIATION CAREER FAIR at Republic Airport, Farmingdale, NY

The goal of this event is to introduce both middle and high school students to the various careers available in the aviation industry.

James G. Plackis of Flotilla 12-07 is scheduled to be one of the Guest Speakers and FAA Safety Counselors.

The focus will be a "hands on" approach to give young people a more vivid picture of different aviation careers presented by professionals working in these fields. The Aviation and Aerospace Career Fair will be hosting exhibitors, aircraft on display, and aircraft simulators. Exhibitors at our past events include the FAA, Navy, 106th Rescue Wing, Northrop Grumman, News 12, JetBlue, and many more.

This event is open to middle and high schools and to the public. While there is no fee for entrance to the event, all attendees must be registered for the event in order to attend.
